The sitter, also known as Lord Glenorchy (1695-1782), was a Scottish nobleman and diplomat who held numerous political offices during his long life. Here Ramsay depicts him in the robes of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, a British chivalric order founded in 1725 by King George I. Campbell wears the mantle (adorned with star) and collar of the Order, while the enormous hat, adorned with white ostrich feathers, rests beside him.
