Jeremiah Theus was an artist who brought the Rococo style of portraiture to America. Trained in Switzerland, he moved to Charleston, South Carolina around 1735. His portraits are known for the straightforward and open expressions of the sitters, representing two ideals of the Age of Enlightenment - honesty and dignity. Here, the young sitter's pose, dress and accoutrements indicate the aristocratic aspirations of his wealthy family. The painting is set in a beautifully carved American Rococo frame.
