Francesco Salviati was trained in Florence, but left for Rome early in his career. He had been invited to continue his studies by Cardinal Giovanni Salviati (see his portrait on this wall, SN65), whose surname he adopted. Gian Battista Salviati was the nephew of the Cardinal, and is shown here at about age ten. His hand rests on a magnificent decorative helmet, typical of the most luxurious Italian armor production of the period. The portrait thus expresses both his family’s wealth and their hopes for the young man’s future as a strong leader.
