Sebastiano del Piombo was trained in Venice but moved to Rome early in his career, becoming close with Michelangelo, who encouraged him and provided designs for some of his paintings. The commission for this work, in fact, came through Michelangelo, who had offered to paint Cardinal Salviati himself, but then asked Sebastiano to produce the portrait instead. Though the faces have suffered damage, other areas, such as the white drapery and hands of the Cardinal, are well preserved. The weighty, sculpted mass of the Cardinal’s body, and his twisting pose, show Michelangelo’s influence.
