Francesco Zaganelli worked in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, mostly producing altarpieces for local churches. This small painting may be a fragment of a larger work, since it resembles figures of saints which appeared on the sides (pilasters) of altarpieces produced in this region. Saint Sebastian’s legend records that he was sentenced to death for his Christian beliefs, and was shot by archers while bound to a tree. Though he did not die from these wounds, he was later killed for confronting the Emperor Diocletian over his persecution of Christians.
