Andrea del Brescianino spent most of his career in Siena and Florence, and painted a number of similar portraits of women. This sitter was clearly a woman of means, as indicated by the fine fabrics and jewelry she wears. As was often the case in portraits of women in this period, her face, while clearly that of a recognizable person, is also somewhat idealized. The sitter probably requested the artist depict her holding a book, to emphasize her interest in learning.
