Born into a family of artists, the Venetian painter Francesco Guardi became famous in the 1760s for his depictions of his native city (known as vedute). This and another allegorical scene, Abudance, date from an earlier phase in his career, and probably formed part of a piece of furniture made for a Venetian palazzo. The free handling of paint, densely applied in some areas, is a hallmark of Francesco’s style.
