The marriage ceremony of Marie de’ Medici to King Henri IV of France took place in the cathedral of Florence on October 5, 1606. Since Henri IV was too busy to attend his own wedding, the bride’s uncle, Grand Duke Ferdinand of Tuscany, stood in his place and is pictured slipping a ring onto his niece’s finger. Rubens, who attended the actual event, is shown standing behind the bride, holding a cross and looking at the viewer.
