This is one of a pair of naturalistically rendered young male deer found in 1756 at the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum. Their placement in the villa’s garden, together with other animals and Dionysiac figures, was in keeping with the Roman taste for feral subjects typical of Hellenistic sculpture.
