Excavated in 1754, this statue is one of a pair of young athletes found in the garden of the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum. Although the boy was at one time believed to be a wrestler, his lean figure and momentary pose – with raised right heel – suggest that he might be a runner, poised at the starting line.
