A resident of Haarlem, Hals was one of the finest portrait painters of the Dutch seventeenth century. He brought an unprecedented liveliness and dash to portraiture’s traditional format and poses. Powerful to his appeal was Hals’ ability to communicate a sense of well-being and high-spiritedness. Here we see Pieter Jacobsz Olycan (1572–1658), one of Haarlem’s leading citizens, a wealthy brewer and a political figure. The immediacy of the impression depends not only on his responsive facial expression, but also on the vigor of the brushstrokes, especially in the face.
