This Renaissance furniture piece is typical of northern 16th-century style, a blending of classical and medieval forms. The cupboard, in particular, shows the mixture of religious and secular imagery. A powerfully carved Annunciation group is in the center of the upper register, while below the mythological subject of the Judgment of Paris is observed. This depiction is most amusing because Paris is anachronistically shown as a medieval knight and the goddesses as Renaissance ladies.
