Silvia Levenson lives and works in Italy, where she has been exploring the narrative potential of cast glass since moving there from Argentina in the 1980s. The conceptual focus of her glass sculpture often reveals the tensions and conflicts that exist in daily life and relationships. Throughout her career, Levenson has explored personal and political subjects related to women’s experiences. 13 lbs. of Love references a recurring theme in Levenson’s work: domestic violence.
The translucent pink glass hand grenade is a metaphor for the fragility of relationships and the domestic abuse many women worldwide face every day. The artist’s choice to use pink glass alludes to a home’s appearance as a happy place on the surface while the form of the hand grenade represents the dangers women encounter but don’t speak about openly about.
