<italics>Illustrated Book of Plants</italics>, first published 1856–1862, is Japan’s earliest botanical encyclopedia to use Linnaean taxonomy. The encyclopedia was compiled by Iinuma Yokusai, a pioneer of modern botany, Dutch medicine, and photography. Yokusai drew all 1,259 specimens depicted in the 20 volumes of the encyclopedia, most of which he collected from his garden.
