Mollie Brown, the daughter of the famous equestrienne Mme. Louise Tournaire, was born in New Jersey in 1860. She began a professional career at age 6 with L.B. Lent’s Equescurriculum. As a child performer, she was noted for remarkable strength and endurance and was an outstanding pad and bareback rider. Brown is credited with being the first woman to turn a somersault on a bareback horse from a standing position. She performed for almost twenty years, traveling with shows like P. T. Barnum’s, Montgomery Queen’s, and Batcheller & Doris. Molly Brown died in Philadelphia in 1924.
