Circus star power was not limited to humans. Traveling in a special railroad car, Jumbo was a featured attraction on the Barnum show. On September 15, 1885 tragedy struck when the great creature was killed by a passing train. The ingenious Barnum, however, continued to display Jumbo, both as an enormous skeleton and mounted hide.
