Marvin Lipofsky played a pioneering role in the American Studio Glass Movement with his groundbreaking work that stretched the potential of glass as a sculptural medium, and he remained an influential teacher and prolific artist throughout his lengthy career. He often traveled to glass studios around the country and the world to work in collaboration with glassblowers to create new work. Lipofsky’s abstract sculptural forms incorporate colorful patterns into biomorphic shapes. This vibrant example dates to a collaboration with the glass program at San José State University in southern California, where students assisted Lipofsky as a team in shaping molten glass into seven mold-blown forms for this series. Then Lipofsky continued to work on the pieces to finish them in his studio in Berkeley, California. Lipofsky realized his signature aesthetic by using cold-working techniques, including cutting to further enhance the contours of the asymmetrical shape, and sandblasting and acid-etching to achieve a matte finish on the exterior that contrasts with the glossy interior.
