Ann Wolff is considered a leading artist in the studio glass movement in Europe.
In her prolific career spanning over fifty years, Wolff’s creative output has
ranged from designing wares for Kosta Boda glassworks to engraving vessels,
kiln-casting sculpture, and making stained glass as an independent artist. This
bowl dates to a series from the 1970s and 1980s. Wolff collaborated with master
glassblower, Wilke Adolfsson, to create glass blanks using the overlay technique,
which involves building layers of color on a molten glass bubble. Wolff treated
the surface of plates and bowls as her canvas by etching and sandblasting her
diary-like imagery into the layers of colors metaphorically corresponding to layers
of her identity. Rather than a linear narrative, the finely etched details form a
narrative collage. The shoes, ladder, teapot, fish, and nude figures seen here relate to the joys and responsibilities of everyday life on the farm where Wolff raised her children and established her glass studio in rural Sweden. Throughout her career, Wolff has focused the content of her glass art on aspects of women’s lives.
