As a self-taught artist, Kéké Cribbs has produced work in variety of media and techniques to convey a mythical world with multicultural references. For this rocking chair, the etched glass back and seat are ornamented with symbolic imagery. The central female figure is a medicine woman, who shares her knowledge and wisdom to protect those in her care, represented by the humans, flora and fauna surrounding her. The basket atop her head is a vessel for holding water, and serves as a symbol of the female as a giver of life. Additionally, the patterns featured on the seat were inspired by indigenous textile designs that Cribbs learned about while living in New Mexico.
