Working in glass since the 1980s, Robert Carlson
is best-known for painting vibrant motifs onto clear,
colorless three-dimensional glass forms. For Carlson,
painting on glass is a meditation with the images being
applied spontaneously rather than preconceived
imagery. The artist has been inspired by religions,
myths, and indigenous traditions from around the world
to create narrative imagery that embodies a range of
iconography. Carlson views such cultural and historical
symbols in relation to ideas that inform and reflect the
modern American psyche. Ultimately, his mythopoetic
work is an attempt to understand humanity and our
core beliefs by analyzing the meaning of images in
relation to the ways that people imagine ourselves.
