Emil Goetschi, born in Switzerland in 1921, began performing on the unicycle when he was six years old. With his brothers, Hans and Karl, he formed The 3 Goetschis, a unicycle act that performed throughout Europe. In 1946 Emil Goetschi married tightwire performer Lola Dobritch and the two came to America the following year with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The Goetschis’ act consisted of balancing together in various positions while the bottom man rode a unicycle around the ring. Emil also performed his own stunt, riding a unicycle up the side of his miniature globe. Once at the top, Goetschi would leap his cycle onto a two foot pole mounted on top of the prop.
