Lou Jacobs (1903 – 1992) was born Jacob Ludwig in Germany and went on to become one of the best known faces of the American circus. In 1924 Jacobs joined Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus where he stayed for the rest of his career. As a master of clowning, his giant smile, tiny fedora and outrageous costume were recognized worldwide. Jacobs left a rich legacy as a clown, inventor, and tutor. He was the most famous example of the American auguste with his favorite small automobile, and gags with his irrepressible dogs Knucklehead and Peewee. His face appeared on a 1966 U.S. postage stamp as well as millions of circus posters.
