Rosa, who had studied and worked in Naples before moving to Rome, was a painter, printmaker, poet and actor, and one of the most colorful personalities of the 17th century. Though he is best known for his expressive, rugged landscapes, Rosa also painted many figural compositions and produced a number of etchings. This image of a soldier from The Ringling's collection is part of Rosa's famous <i>Figurine</i> series of etchings, which contains 62 images of soldiers and genre figures. Though the series does not illustrate a story, the energetic poses of many of its figures suggest narratives outside the individual compositions. Rosa's rendering of armor, helmets and weapons here is somewhat schematic, focusing less on descriptive detail and more on how the armor appeared on bodies in motion.
