The black-figure technique of decoration was perfected in Athens during the sixth century B.C. The Edinburgh Painter was a late practitioner of this style and used a mixture of red-figure technique and white paint in some details. This vase shows a lively quadriga (four-horse chariot) carrying armored figures on the main face while the reverse shows a conclave of warriors and civilians or gods. The painter’s skill is exemplified in the quick-paced movement of the horses and their excited expressions.
