A krater is a large vessel for mixing wine and water. This type is named after its column-like handles. The decoration of this face of the vase shows a seated Amazon (or perhaps Oscan) warrior with two attendants. Apulia was a prosperous Greek settlement in Southern Italy. Its pottery types mimicked those of mainland Greece but were painted with greater freedom and more elaborate decorations and form, evident in this example's exuberant floral decoration and freely handled drawing.
