Despite its abraded condition due to damage and over-cleaning in the past, this painting shows the sensitivity, balance and subtle dignity characteristic of Lotto's late works. Both this painting and the icon SN 915, Madonna and Child, depict the double nature of the Virgin's relation to Christ as one of familial love and sacred reverence.
