De Mura’s work is emblematic of the Rococo style in Naples, where he enjoyed a long and prolific career. This painting depicts Aloysius (Luigi) Gonzaga (1568-1591; canonized 1726), an Italian nobleman who renounced his worldly titles and entered the church. It relates closely to an altarpiece of the same subject De Mura painted for the church of the Gesù Vecchio in Naples around 1758, and was likely painted in his workshop as a ricordo, or copy, of that important commission.
