Born into a family of architects based in Rome, Francesco Navone worked principally in the area of ecclesiastical architecture, and also supplied theatrical drawings (not an uncommon practice for architects at the time). Though the architectural elements here are elaborately conceived, his style in this sheet is joyously free, with lively pen lines drawn mostly freehand, and a loose application of brown, green, blue, and grey washes.
