The sharp, linear quality of the ink lines in this Ringling study indicates that it is a drawing after an etching. In 1719, Guercino's nephews, Cesari and Benedetto Gennari, commissioned the Bolognese artist, Domenico Maria Bonaveri (1653-1731) to etch a copy of a portrait drawing by Guercino (now lost). The Ringling sheet was drawn by an imitator of Guercino after the Bonaveri etching. Although twice removed from the original study, this drawing nonetheless betrays a number of Guercino's hallmark qualities. Its lively and varied pen work, composed of quick, broken contour lines and bold, angular hatching were regularly employed by the artist. The medium of pen and ink was also one that he favored.
