Luca Cambiaso was one of the more prolific artists of his time. Producing thousands of drawings and numerous monumental frescoes, in his graphic work he is best known for his strong figural abstraction. Capturing only the most salient features of his figures, with few, abbreviated, almost nervous lines, Cambiaso's compositions take on an almost geometric quality, which allowed him to better understand questions of movement, foreshortening, and space. Like many of his fellow draftsmen, Cambiaso used drawing as a medium for exercise, training, and exploration of artistic problems. Often producing numerous studies for the same painting, he would select the most successful passage from each and synthesize them in the final painted composition. The Ringling drawing has been related to Cambiaso's only surviving altarpiece with St. Sebastian, Saint Roche with Saints Siro and Sebastian (Genoa, Sta Maria della Castagna, Quarto dei Mille).
