In 1965, the Ringling Museum commissioned Dr. J.R. Stewart to undertake an excavation on the Lapatsa Tomb 15 on the northern coast of Cyprus. Excavations were completed in 1972 and part of the collection came to the museum in 1974. This tomb group shows pottery from the earliest phase of the Bronze Age in Cyprus (c. 2500 to 1050 B.C.). In this period, the pottery was made by hand, not thrown on a wheel, and the main ceramic types were Black and Red Polished wares. The example shown here is Red Polished Ware of the earliest type. Although this spouted container has no painted or incised decoration, its perfectly round globe shape impresses with its simplicity and strength as well as inspires admiration for the skill of the potter.
