After six years abroad, American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens briefly returned home to New York in the winter of 1872-73. During his sojourn in the city, Saint-Gaudens won a number of commissions from high-profile clients, among them lawyer Edwin W. Stoughton (1818-1882). This portrait bust shows Stoughton in both a realistic mode, faithfully capturing his distinctive curly hair, and as an idealized classical figure, complete with antique-style drapery.
