Federico Gaetano Villa was an Italian sculptor best known for his portrait busts and larger-scale sculpture groups. He showed his works at the most important international exhibitions of the day, including the Philadelphia Centennial in 1876 and the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878, where he found a ready audience of bourgeois buyers, some of them American.
