Roth [1846-1910], when Balthasar Roth retired and transferred proprietorship of the hotel and its assets to Edward N. Roth; purchased by Margaret B. Roth [1856-1930], wife of Edward N. Roth, in June 1911 for $3,000 at an auction of the St. Nicholas Hotel assets; purchased by John Ringling [1866-1936] in 1917 from Margaret B. Roth for an unknown amount after he saw the painting hanging at the Sinton Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio
