Graneri was born in Turin, and his detailed depictions of life in that city are among his most enduring and beloved works. This painting may have been part of a series, as two other similar works survive, and all three have the same original (and unusual) papier-mâché frames. The lottery shown here—the drawing is taking place on the balcony at center—would have benefited a civic charity. Graneri was particularly adept at capturing both the grandeur of the city’s architecture and the everyday details of the market square.
