This type of chamber concert scene, with three-quarter length seated figures against a dark background, became very popular in Rome in the 1620s and 30s. Vanni, who was trained in Florence, would have been inspired by such works during his stay in Rome during those same decades. Vanni’s biographer describes this painting (or one of the several variants that survive), and tells us that the figure on the left is the artist’s self-portrait.
