This sheet from The Ringling's collection comes from a series of engraved portraits of the Medici family commissioned by Leopoldo de' Medici from the Dutch printmaker Adriaen Haelwegh. Haelwegh, who specialized in portraits and book illustration, worked in Amsterdam before moving to Italy in the 1660s. The image reproduces a portrait of Leopoldo by the Flemish artist Justus Sustermans (1597-1681), official portraitist at the Medici court in Florence. Leopoldo was made a cardinal in 1667 by Pope Clement IX, and thus appears here in cardinal's vestments.
