Though long attributed to Luca Carlevaris, this one of a pair of views of Piazza San Marco in Venice has been reattributed to Johan Richter, a Swedish painter who studied with Carlevaris and spent the last part of his life in Venice. Vedute (view paintings) such as these were in high demand from visitors on the Grand Tour in the 18th century. The works show different vantage points of the principal square in Venice, but also portray charming details of contemporary life, including figures wearing masks, and actors performing on temporary wooden stages.
