This and another small-scale view (vedute) of Venice were designed as a pair, and were likely commissioned by a tourist visiting the city on the Grand Tour. Canaletto had built his career through his detailed views of Venice and its monuments, and even late in life, when he painted these two, his work was still in high demand, particularly from English collectors. Although the architecture is immediately recognizable, Canaletto has slightly distorted the perspective here to achieve more dramatic and harmonious compositions.
