Theater was a major source of subject matter among Ming-dynasty porcelains. This double-sided cube portrays scenes from popular plays. The intricately crafted settings and the characters’ costume and poses give the cube a compelling sense of depth and action. Details as fine as the embroidery on the figures’ clothing and the tiling of the rooves are vividly depicted.
