Figurines of real and mythical animals from Dehua’s kilns enjoyed great popularity among European audiences. They display a wide range of expression and personality, as seen in the snarling dogs, the stern hawk, and the alert roosters. The textures of furs, feathers, and scales are rendered in fine detail in these objects. The hawk figurine in particular displays great attention to the various patterns and surfaces of the bird’s plumage and talons.
