Fruits, flowers, and rich textiles appear throughout the work of Gianlisi, an artist who worked in northern Italy in the seventeenth century. His brocaded silks and cut velvets are both weighty and soft, and are typically decorated with gold fringe and tassels painted with frantic, calligraphic brushwork. Also distinctive of the artist is his inclusion of domestic animals in his still lifes, and his ability to depict these small creatures, like the dog here with red ribbons decorating its ears, with skill and humor.
