Azechi Umetarō's prints are immediately recognizable by their bold simplicity, distinctive palette, and subject matter of mountain climbers. Regarding his affinity for alpine themes, he explained, “I don’t like to sketch where there are people around watching me. This led me to the mountains.” Largely self-taught, Azechi forged his individual style while benefiting from relationships with more established artists like Hiratsuka Un’ichi and Onchi Kōshirō.
