This image may at first glance appear to be purely abstract, but is in fact based on a photograph of the side of a building. It is part of a series of six prints the artist created depicting weathered urban walls whose patched and peeling paintwork appears as fields of lush color and texture. Yoshida Hodaka belongs to the third generation of the Yoshida family, best known through the scenic landscape prints of his father Yoshida Hiroshi (1876–1950). Hodaka and his wife Chizuko, broke with his father’s realistic style and instead pursued abstraction and montage.
