While living in Providence, Rhode Island, for fifteen years, José Chardiet created a series of works inspired by architecture. Although Donut depicts a building’s façade, the artist also intended the work to be figurative. The architectural form references the body with the round donut as the head and the building as the shoulders and torso. The plated metal on the glass surface is like the skin with the transparent glass akin to looking inside someone’s soul. Correspondingly, the heart-shaped air bubble is an integral part of the work. Given the fragility of glass and the costliness of gold, the idea of preciousness infuses the work.
