Juana Romani (1867-1924), who was born in Italy but moved to Paris with her family at age 10, was one of the shining lights of the Parisian art scene around 1900. After starting out as an artist's model, she soon took up painting, and quickly earned praise for her virtuosic technique and distinctive style. Nearly all her paintings depict women dressed in luxurious textiles, often gazing out at the viewer. Sadly, by 1904, at the height of her fame, Romani's mental health began to deteriorate, and she spent the last part of her life in and out of various asylums. Quickly forgotten after her departure from the art scene, she has recently been rediscovered by scholars and collectors, and is again being recognized for her enormous talent.
