Former keeper of the Department of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, in the British Museum. He writes about Native North America; his publications including co-edited collections: Arctic Clothing (2005), Woodlands Art (2007) and ethnographic collectors Provenance (2006).

Jonathan worked with Howard Tibbals to collect and purchase items related to European and International Circus from 1999 through the present.
