Giovanni CarianiItalian, ca. 1485 - 1547
Giovanni Busi, called Cariani, was born near Bergamo, but lived and worked mainly in Venice, save a sojourn to Bergamo in the late 1510s. Cariani worked in a style based on that of Titian and Palma Vecchio, but tended to coarser brushwork, and his works are generally attributed and dated through comparison with a group of signed portraits. In addition to portraits, Cariani painted a great number of portrait-like paintings of saints and figures from mythology and history.
