Hanna Hansdotter’s artistic practice is influenced by the glassmaking industry in Sweden, where she began glassblowing at two famous firms, Kosta Boda and Orrefors. As an artist and designer, Hansdotter transforms the technique of mold-blowing glass into an iron armature by bringing a sense of playfulness to the sculpture she creates. The bulging shapes and slumping form of Tiffany Print II are a departure from traditional, symmetrical products made by this method. The force of the glassblower’s breath makes the glass bubble expand and protrude through the metal armature. While the form is still malleable, Hansdotter further manipulates the glass with torches and tools. The artist intends to capture a sense of movement with the biomorphic form referencing the female body. While she creates multiple works in a series, each sculpture is unique in terms of the distorted ornamental pattern and the shimmering, mirrorized surface. Hansdotter looks to the history of glassmaking for inspiration, and the title is in homage to the influential American glassmaking firm, Tiffany Studios (active 1878-1933).
