The abbreviated yet lifelike representation of a cricket perched on a gourd is typical of the impressionistic style of the Kyoto artist Hatta Koshū. Koshū was a student of Maruyama Ōkyo (1733–1795), a pioneer of realistic painting in early modern Japan. During the 19th century, woodblock printed picture books of assorted subjects such as this made relatively affordable alternatives to original paintings, and served as copybooks for budding artists.
